MEGA September 2019

Forever intertwined in space, time, and circumstance, music and fashion offer this symbiotic relationship that elevates the other to an even more fantastic level. Taking inspiration from each other, the two pillars of creativity have seen many concepts take flight, proving that while a standout on their own, they become increasingly better when paired together. It is with this that we present MEGA’s first ever music issue, in the years most anticipated and celebrated issues, no less. Seeing what they have been doing, and most importantly, listening to what they have to say, musically and otherwise, we gather seven of the freshest acts that are making the airwaves more melodic than ever. Striking transformations inspired by musical genres aside from their own, witness how Frankie Pangilinan, Gabbi Garcia, Jess Connelly, Kiana Valenciano, KZ Tandingan, Maris Racal, and Maymay Entrata raise their voices to your attention. The big fashion issue gets moved by the rhythm, incorporating music in must-have fashion, chart-topping beauty, and barrier-breaking conversations that give a symphonic depth to music. All things considered, the pertinent call to action here is to assess and access that stirring sense of individuality and sing your own song or make your hymn be heard to make that lingering imprint as if it was that LSS you will not ever want to let go of.

Whether it’s a modest showing or a full baring, it is apparent that more and more people are getting comfortable in the skin that they are in. Now, while there is definitely a lot more to go in the quest for full confidence, we are furthering this conversation in this issue that is centered on anything and everything skin. No less than a skin-perfect face fronts this issue, in the person of actress, Erich Gonzales, whose natural beauty is taken to the next level with her regimen’s best kept secret, which she is now sharing to us all. Redefining the surface standard according to what is right by her, Erich Gonzales inadvertently teaches that true beauty lies with yourself and not what anyone else sees. This month, skin runs through many stories that range from self-reliance and self-assurance in fashion and beauty. Thinking of going au naturale? There is a lot to choose from, whether it be a range of earth-toned styles to treatments that guarantee a skin that is healthy and glowing sans makeup. Pride. It’s the words on everybody’s minds and lips, more so now than ever. While the world has peddled its buzz far and wide, do we really know what pride is? This month, we don’t just crack open the dictionary and leaf through. Instead, we thought of you; we talked to you, hopefully figuring out what it is to so many different people and their circumstances. Equality. Arguably considered a crowned jewel that decorates the rich and storied culture of the Philippines and pageantry today, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray fronts the Pinoy Pride issue as a real life silver lining. Proudly waving the colors of the country as a Filipina, Catriona takes us through her epic moments and adventures in New York City and all over the world, reminding us why being in the moment is a luxury we should all be more mindful of. Meanwhile, we also have RuPaul’s Drag Race (double) all-star, Manila Luzon on the cover as well. Headlining a pride that many fights for, identify with, and live as, the world-famous drag personality who traces her roots in the Philippines teaches us, among many other things, that in light of a grim and often unflinching world, no one can ever take away your truth and joy. Freedom. Pride comes in many permutations, all of which runs its course in the June issue. From a beautiful story of discovery and transition to the inspiring global Pinoys that raise the flag heroically in their corner of the globe, the point of this all becomes clear: we are here to herald, champion, and persist the liberties every human being deserves. And no label, preference, stereotype, and point-of-view will steer us from the goal that one day, the world lives a life of no resistance.

Typically, the focus of the month of love trains its eye to one that is paired-up, googly-eyed and romantic. But in the progression of our lives, we have understood that before we can fully commit to a rose-colored love, we first have to grasp our self-worth. Self-love gets thrown around a lot as a social buzzword, but only recently have we truly gotten its scope. With this in mind, we sought to explore the different facets of self-love in the pages of the magazine we produced with so much care. No stranger to transformations, Alex Gonzaga has gone through and successfully persisted through challenges that not only tested her mettle in the industry, but most importantly, firming up her ability to adapt to changes and spring from it much, much stronger than even she thought it possible. Withstanding what is perhaps the greatest hurdle of her career, she shifts a focus to where the future is headed, adding vlogger and digital personality to her multiple hyphenates. A true testament of self-love in its most essential form, she has inadvertently taught us that life is truly what we make of it. Taking a cue from the intimate and internalized process of self-love, the pages of fashion, beauty, and features takes you on a journey with pieces and visuals that will reaffirm that this sense of self isn’t selfish or vain, but rather, a conduit to what will inevitably make you the best person you can possibly allow yourself too. And that, we believe, is the most beautiful gift of love you can give the most important person in your life—you.

MEGA MAN March 2020

In the persistent pursuit of the lives of the rich and famous, we mere mortals are often at that peering point of the outside looking in. With their lives lived in veritable fishbowls, we wonder what it must be like to submit to the power of the people, pressing their faces and tapping the glass for even just a speck of attention. What we do not know is that from the other side, the world is weighing on them, too. And in this process trails anxiety, self-doubt, and maybe even depression. The easier-said-than-done solution? Self-love. “‘Yun ‘yung New Year’s resolution ko actually, na this year, mas mamahalin ko sarili ko. Of course, masarap mag-work, masarap kumita, pero kailangan mo muna isipin ‘yung sarili mo, lalo na ang health mo,” shares Ruru Marid, this month’s cover star. “Kailangan mong isipin na mas kailangan natin ‘yung katawan natin kaysa sa mas kailangan tayo ng katawan natin—and it’s not just physical, but also mental. We need to also think about what will make our minds at ease and at peace.” All it takes is one, and with this grasp of the self, even greater, more powerful things can spring forth from within, just you watch.

A fitting first first into the new year, this first issue of the decade is no procedural reminder that rotates on change, resolution, and clean slates. What this stands to be is a consciousness to make things matter and count, just as Kit Thompson has since navigated his return to the mainstream. Yes, there will always be something to prove, something to say, and most importantly, something to do. While that still persists with enough aggression to spring us forward, there now exists an understanding that you don’t have to go hard or else you’ll go home. Any efforts will stack up to an end that is nothing but right and deserving of and by you. Welcome to the new year, a new age, and fittingly, a new you.

MEGA MAN December 2019

Ronnie Alonte knows he is famous, but not in a totally caught up, pretentious, and if we are being completely unhinged here, offensive kind of way. Unlike a self-effacing contemporary with a false sense of humility, he doesn’t wince at the mere mention of the word. In fact, he will be the very first one to duck at the very second it tumbles out, evading it as if it were a bullet with a mission to pierce through his cooler than cool, nonchalant vibe.

MEGA MAN September 2019

Following the rhythm that rules the inner workings of our actualized self, we make a move towards heightened sense of self for our much-awaited fashion issue. There are no razzle, dazzle productions, pounding beats, and persisting buzz that commands the landscape of music today. Instead, we hear the subtle synths and thoughtful orchestrations that elevate the definition of what it takes to be a man today. Emerging from the dug-out of his life, recalibrated and refreshed, cager and collaborator Kobe Paras stands taller, making it known why is out there set to win. Proving that there is more to his play and game, the explosive cager reveals his turn to fashion with a partnership with H&M that is a style slam dunk you should be taking notice of. Further this month, we explore the tenets of menswear and thresh out whether the trends that fashion churns out becomes a moment missed. Whatever it reveals to be eventually, the earnest goal here is to make you understand yourself even more in fashion and style, hopefully giving you a more defined sense of self and perhaps a willful purpose pacing forward.

What is your truth? While our counterparts at MEGA talk about the beauty standard as qualified by the skin, we dive deep into a different kind of uncovering—one that aims to reveal the necessary truth that makes each and every one of us unique. Yes, there will still be lashes of skin here and there, but this time, we are going beyond just the surface level. Navigating through the complexities of fame and phenomenon, Alden Richards resurfaces to the forefront with many things on hand: a new film, a new confidence, and well, a new-ish disposition. Much more certain and deliberate in his footing, the actor makes it clear why he hasn’t really gone anywhere, just making himself better for us to be inspired by.

MEGAStyle August 2020 with Camille Co

“Do not judge me okay?” says Camille Co with a laugh, puncturing the drawl of the considered and almost clinical quiet like a sharp beam of sunshine that immediately colored the room with a much-needed warmth. Not that there was a need for her to set a seemingly apologetic disclaimer, but she is of course alluding to a peppering of selfies and TikTok videos, all of which were to document what would be her first out-of-the-house shoot since the globally and government-mandated quarantine. “Everything feels so surreal,” she reveals just as she had her rapid test done. “In all honesty, every day is different. I wish it’s all fun and games but reality is, it’s hard to always stay ON during a pandemic. However, I think I’m coping well. I’ve learned to accept the fact that some days will be shitty. Some days won’t be as good. I won’t feel as inspired. I won’t feel okay—and this is totally fine. It’s part of coping. And then there are days when I’m feeling my best, which I make the most out of, definitely.”
MEGAStyle November 2020 Patrick Starr

If this were any other year, then the wispy tufts of bubblegum pink against a backdrop in a similar, but ever so light a shade would prove to be a sight visibly startling, until it eventually settles to a pleasant sense of calm. But this is 2020, a frame of time once heralded as one of abundant possibility, precise clarity, and sterling vision, until the violent wrath of nature’s revenge fanned its talons and bared its fangs in a revelation so sharp that it has dug itself deep into the dermis of our collective existence. Clinging unbelievably hard, the pandemic continues to ravage the very foundations our realities are built on, tearing away at our comforts and convenience of what once was. Really, nothing is that shocking anymore. Race supremacy? Check? Political upheaval? Check, check. Gender inequality and discrimination? Check, check, check.
MEGAStyle November 2020 Bright & Win

Thai actors, Bright and Win, have disrupted the usual notion of what Philippine primetime is. Earlier this year, we all braced our heartstrings as we saw the two dive into a show that has launched their career to a multinational audience. This drove a social media frenzy not only in Thailand, but in other South East Asian countries as well. As a matter of fact, it was one of the most viewed series in the Philippine’s iWant streaming platform. With Bright and Win just at the early stages of their career, who’s to figure what these boys will do next? Read on to find out about their latest venture in the Philippines.

It’s ironic how change is the only constant thing in this world. Lovers, friendships, and even careers have expiration dates. Moreover, we can all agree that if there is one thing that this pandemic has opened our eyes to, it’s that anything can disappear in an instant. That’s why now more than ever, resilience is required to survive. Nothing ever comes easy in life, and as they say, the only way we can achieve our goals is to adapt.

Much like how fashion is constantly evolving, music also keeps up with the ever-changing times. With the art of music being subjective, it will always make a way to find new sonically pleasing chords and rhythms that are fresh to our ears. Just look at how the 20th century has a specific genre of music that dominated each decade—from the jazz age, disco era, to the alternative and unapologetically pop 90s.

MEGA Stories: THe Philippine’s Most Iconic

There isn’t any better way to describe it. This is a book about fashion and passion. People sometimes ask how MEGA has stayed on top for so long, and the formula is simple– when people love what they do, magic just happens. And so this book is about people, the ones who chronicle the times and the people who make things happen. And sometimes these two are interchangeable, because when MEGA, the Philippines’ first fashion magazine was launch, it started a whole new industry which changed the game big time of the fashion in this country.

What makes a building delightful? Is it ‘only’ that it functions well? How many buildings do we even know of whose parts attend to the comfort, wellness, and many needs of human beings? This issue, Form Follows Values, is our first attempt in BluPrint to tackle the subject. It is not an easy one to have because it entails opening up about our values and examining whether our work has lived up to them. It means being able to talk about the stuff that really matters in our clients’ lives (not whether they want a six-car garage, roof deck, and infnity pool) and whether the architecture will help sustain and nurture these values.

BluPrint Volume 2 (2019)

The government says: “Build, Build, Build.” We say: “Design, Design, Design.” Considering the totality of what gets built in this country, good architecture is nothing short of a miracle. But the building boom of the past few years has yielded some miracles. There’s the NEX Tower, with its four-story lobby and 11-meter-high green walls, designed by SOM. There’s the Cor Jesu chapel, a collaboration of Kenneth Cobonpue and Zubu Design Associates. Then, there’s Budji+Royal Architecture+Design who have been successfully dealing with tremendous pressure to deliver on skimpy budgets and abbreviated timelines. What they are creating in just over a year’s time in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, is miraculous indeed, thanks to general contractor MTD Philippines’ resolve to finish months ahead of the 2019 SEA Games athletes’ arrival in November.

Like a bridge, sustainability fashions a solution; it examines and critiques in order to identify what is lacking in the environment. Great sustainable designs strive for a universal consensus, just like how truth illuminates all gaps, margins, and recesses of human life. Peruse the pages of BluPrint’s recent issue and we learn about how Dominic Galicia has transformed the Hyundai Logistics Center into a clear testament to the positive consequences of planning for built environments, how Earl Forlales’ award-winning CUBO addresses the perpetuating homelessness and poverty in the Philippines, and the Dutch architecture firm UNStudio answer to the ever-growing issues surrounding densely populated cities. We also discover Vo Trong Nghia Architects’ consistent effort to create and incorporate verdure in homes, and how the House in Leiria by Aires Mateus prominently stands as a consequence of the confrontation between figures and configuration, all the while articulating light and space. Sustainability is not just a simple impression that gradually fades later on. It is a commitment to construct things that will endure, and to give these things a lasting significance.

BluPrint Special 2 (2019)

This special issue features Filipino and ASEAN firms that have made it to the World Architecture Festival 2019. Why ASEAN? Because we share cultural, climatic, and geographical similarities and can learn from each other. Not to mention, we belong to an integrated region that will inevitably allow borderless practice. We also feature two Filipino WAF winners, who share their thoughts on design issues, as well as advice on presenting before the live jury and audience. The WAF 2017 winners of Small Project of the Year, Alexander Furunes and Sudarshan Khadka (representing Locsin and Partners) for example, had this to say: “Architectural projects are multifaceted, and to condense this into eight minutes is not easy. However, eight minutes is plenty if the ideas behind the projects reflect the actions taken… Aim for clarity, find your voice, and have the guts to go for it.
